HISTORY

Live theater has a long history in Benicia!

With the exception of COVID-19 related inactivity, Benicia Theatre Group has been presenting theatrical productions in downtown Benicia, since 1964. Operating out of the historic BDES Hall on West J Street, the BTG presents two productions per year: one in April and one in October.

In the early 1960’s there was a civic-minded group of Benicia citizens who took pride in their community by painting storefronts, cleaning up trash etc. They banded together as The Benicia Old Town Group and in 1964 produced a play as a fundraising opportunity. A faction within the organization wanted to continue presenting plays and they split off forming a new group called the Benicia Old Town Theatre Group (BOTTG).

In the subsequent decades, BOTTG presented plays in the BDES Hall. The 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s saw the Group operating as a very popular dinner theatre, and in the late 90’s reverted to straight theatrical productions.

In 2020, the business streamlined its name to the Benicia Theatre Group and continues its tradition of presenting theatrical productions to this day.

In the fall of 2022, The Benicia Theatre Group will present LAURA, the classic murder mystery which was the source for the 1946 movie of the same name that starred Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews.

SCRAPBOOKS

Benicia Theatre Group (BOTTG) has been providing live entertainment for Benicia, Solano County, and the San Francisco Bay Area since 1964. During performances we have offered several scrapbooks filled with photos, articles, playbills, and LOTS of memories for patrons to browse. Over the years the well-loved pages have come loose and we have had to put away the scrapbooks for safe keeping. Through your support, and the hard work of the Vacaville Heritage Council, we are digitally preserving them through Archive.org and are excited to offer memories over the years through the archiving of the scrapbooks.

Enjoy the trip down memory lane!
